Privacy Policy

The short version
I collect what you type into the contact form, and the basic technical information your browser sends to any website. I use it to reply to you and to see which pages are worth keeping. I don't sell it, I don't advertise to you, and I don't share it with anyone except the handful of services that help me run the site and send email.
There's no cookie banner here. Analytics start when the page loads, and the section below tells you exactly what runs and how to switch it off.
The rest of this page is the same thing said carefully.
Who I am
TWST Studio Inc. is a one-person design studio based in North Vancouver, British Columbia. I'm Mikayla Ericsson, and I'm the person responsible for personal information collected through this site. You can reach me at hello@twst.studio with any question about privacy, and I'll answer it myself.
What I collect
What you send me. When you fill in the contact form, I receive your name, your email address, what you're looking for help with, when you'd like to start, the budget range you selected, and whatever you write in the message. Naming your organization is optional. If you email me directly instead, I have whatever you put in the email.
What your browser sends. Like most websites, this one records some technical information when you visit: your IP address, your browser and device type, the pages you look at, how long you stay, and the site you arrived from. This comes through Google Analytics, described below.
What I don't collect. No payment information, because nothing is sold here. No accounts, because there's nothing to log into. No location beyond the rough region an IP address suggests. And I don't buy contact lists or add anyone to a mailing list from a form submission.
Why I collect it
Your enquiry exists so I can reply to it, understand what you need, quote the work, and if we go ahead, deliver it. If we don't work together, that's the end of it.
The analytics exist so I can see which work people actually read and which pages nobody reaches. That's it. There's no profiling, no scoring, and no attempt to work out who you are as an individual.
Under British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act and the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, I collect only what's reasonable for these purposes, and I use it only for the purpose you gave it to me for.
Cookies and analytics
This site uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages get read. It sets cookies named _ga and _ga_ followed by a property ID, which stay on your device for up to two years and let Google recognize a returning browser without knowing who you are.
There's no consent banner on this site, so I should be straight with you about what that means: the analytics load when the page does, before you've had a chance to say anything about it. I've chosen not to put a banner in front of a portfolio site, and the honest trade is that you get told here rather than asked there.
Switching it off is a browser setting, not a favour I have to grant. Blocking or clearing cookies for this site in your browser stops it, private browsing stops it, most content blockers stop it, and Google publishes an opt-out add-on for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge that stops it everywhere at once. The site works exactly the same either way, because nothing here depends on knowing you've visited before.
If you'd rather just tell a person, email hello@twst.studio and I'll remove what's associated with you from the analytics as far as Google's tools let me.
Google Analytics data is processed by Google, which may store and handle it outside Canada, including in the United States. Countries have different privacy laws, and information held in another country can be accessible to that country's courts and authorities.
There is no advertising on this site, no advertising cookies, no cross-site tracking, and no data sold or shared with data brokers.
The services that help me run this
A few companies necessarily touch your information. Each does one job.
- Nordcraft hosts the site, so their servers handle every request your browser makes.
- Directus, running on my own server in Toronto, stores contact form submissions.
- MailerSend delivers the email that lets me know you've written, and my reply if I send one that way. It processes that email in the United States.
- Google provides the analytics described above, and serves a few typefaces used for the Indigenous language characters in the land acknowledgement.
- Cloudflare and unpkg deliver some of the code that makes the site work. Loading a file from them means your IP address reaches their servers, the same as any file request anywhere on the web.
I don't give any of them permission to use your information for their own purposes.
Crossing borders
Your contact form submissions stay in Canada, on a server in Toronto. Two things do leave: the email MailerSend sends me when you write, which is processed in the United States, and the analytics described above, which Google may handle in the United States as well. Where that happens, information is subject to the laws of the country it sits in, and may be accessible to authorities there under those laws. If that's a problem for your organization, tell me before you send anything through the form, and we'll find another way to talk.
How long I keep things
Enquiries that don't turn into projects are deleted after two years. Records from projects I've actually worked on are kept for seven years, which is what tax and business record-keeping rules expect. Analytics data is set to expire after fourteen months. If you'd like your enquiry deleted sooner, just ask, and I'll do it unless I'm required to keep it.
How I protect it
Everything moves over an encrypted connection. The Directus instance sits behind authentication that only I have. Access to your enquiry is limited to one person, which is the one genuine advantage of a studio this size. I keep the software patched and I don't copy client information onto devices that don't need it.
No system is perfectly secure, and I won't pretend otherwise. If a breach ever affected your information in a way that could cause you real harm, I'd tell you and report it as the law requires.
Your rights
You can ask me what personal information I hold about you, and I'll tell you. You can ask me to correct anything that's wrong. You can opt out of the analytics at any time, using any of the routes in the analytics section above. And you can ask me to delete an enquiry. Email hello@twst.studio and I'll respond within thirty days, which is what the legislation allows.
If you're not satisfied with how I've handled a privacy question, you can complain to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia at oipc.bc.ca, or to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca. I'd rather you came to me first, but the door is genuinely open either way.
If you're visiting from outside Canada
This site is aimed at organizations in Canada, and it's run under Canadian privacy law. If you're in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or somewhere else with its own rules, you're welcome here, and I'll honour a request to access or delete your information the same way I would for anyone. Just know that the information is handled in Canada under Canadian law.
Children
This site is for people hiring a design studio, so it isn't aimed at children and I don't knowingly collect information from anyone under sixteen. If you think a child has sent me something through the form, email me and I'll delete it.
Other websites
Some pages link out to client sites and other places worth reading. Once you follow a link you're on someone else's site under someone else's privacy policy, and I have no control over what they collect.
Changes to this policy
If what I do with information changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top moves. Substantial changes get a note on the site rather than a quiet edit.
Getting in touch
Email hello@twst.studio. It reaches one person, and that person is me.
